Overview

A person-centered fitness and wellness program that builds strength, balance, endurance, and healthy habits through adaptive movement and practical daily‑living practice. Available in both Liberia and the USA with culturally adapted content and local delivery options.

It’s for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities; family and caregiver involvement is encouraged.

Key Activities

  • Intake & Functional Assessment: baseline mobility, endurance, balance, nutrition screening, and goal setting with participant and support circle.
  • Adaptive Group Classes: chair-based, circuit training, balance, strength, and low-impact cardio with progressive modifications.
  • One-on-One Coaching: individualized exercise plans, mobility/gait coaching, progression tracking, and safety adjustments.
  • Strength & Flexibility Sessions: resistance-band work, core stability, posture, and guided stretching to reduce fall risk.
  • Cardiovascular Conditioning: walking groups, interval step or cycle options, and easily scaled aerobic activities.
  • Nutrition & Cooking Labs: culturally relevant meal planning, grocery skills, safe food prep demonstrations, and portion education.
  • Functional ADL Practice: exercises integrated into dressing, transfers, grooming, and household tasks to increase independence.
  • Community Practice Outings: supervised trips (parks, markets, transit) to apply stamina and mobility skills in real settings.
  • Caregiver Workshops: safe transfer techniques, exercise support at home, and strategies to sustain healthy routines.
  • Monitoring & Progress Reviews: regular outcome checks (walking distance, timed up-and-go, ADL independence), monthly reviews, and plan updates.

Format & Duration: 12-week introductory cycle (extendable). Typical schedule: 2 group classes/week + monthly one-on-one coaching; flexible options for in-person, community, or hybrid delivery.

Expected Outcomes: improved strength, balance, stamina, healthier eating habits, greater independence with daily tasks, and increased confidence in community participation.
